A Malayalam Unicode font is installed in a computer to view Malayalam content in a web browser. Other wise the Malayalam in the internet is presented as scrambled or unreadble. To install malayalam fonts in an operating system is very easy. But the instructions differ with operating system.

Malayalam Installation Instructions in Windows XP, Windows 7, Windows 8
First Download a Malayalam Unicode Font. Click here to download Anjali Old Lipi Font.
Then save the font into the computer (Say on Desktop).
Then copy the font file using Edit->Copy or right click on the font file and click copy.
Then Open the fonts folder in your system. It is usually in C:windowsfonts.
Or you can get it by run command from Start->Run. type fonts press enter. c:windowsfonts will open
Or go to My Computer> C>Windows> Fonts.
Then paste the font into your system. Edit->paste or Right Click and Paste.
The Malayalam font file will be copied into the fonts folder.
The installation of Malayalam font is now complete.
In some cases the Chillu letter in Malayalam is not displayed on the browsers correctly. To fix this we want to install the language support.
To do that first go to Control Panel.
Double Click on 'Regional and Language options'.
Go to ‘Languages‘ tab.
Select the check box (to enable) ‘Install files for complex script and right-to-left languages (Including Thai)‘.
Click ‘OK‘ for all messages and
you will be prompted for Windows XP installation CD. Put that on the CD Drive and then the installation will complete.
Enable Anjali Old Lipi font for Malayalam Language
To do that go to Control Panel.
Double click ‘Internet Options‘.
Select ‘General‘ tab.
Click the ‘Fonts‘ button.
From ‘Language Script’ drop-down menu, select Malayalam.
Select ‘Anjali Old Lipi‘ from the list.
Click ‘OK‘ to all messages.
This will enable the font for Malayalam.
Enable Malayalam on Firefox Browser
If any problem comes with Firefox browser it can be solved by selecting Anjali Old Lipi as the document font. To do this go to Preferences (Edit->Preferences) then select 'Content'. Under 'Fonts and Colors' -> Default font: Select 'AnjaliOldLipi'.
Enable Malayalam on Google Chrome Browser
On Google chrome click on the = button on the right corner. Then go to 'Settings'. At the bottom of the page 'Show Advanced Settings'. Scroll down to 'Web Content'. Click on 'Customize fonts'. Select Standard font 'AnjaliOldLipi' and Sans Serif Font 'AnjaliOldLipi'. At the bottom select Encoding > 'Unicode (UTF-8)'. Click Finished. This will solve the problem.

All majour linux distributions like Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora, Arch Linux, OpenSUSE are now supporting malayalam language. If you not installed Malayalam language support then you can install it from the repository of the operating system.
Install Malayalam in Ubuntu
You can install the Malayalam language pack from ubuntu repository. To do that open a command terminal (Press Ctrl+T) then the command window will come. Enter the following commands into the terminal. This will add smc repository into the system and install the fonts-smc packages into the system.
A good internet connection is required to download the fonts and install into Ubuntu.
